ExtraTorrent Shuts Down Permanently
Another hit to the torrent community has occurred yesterday when one of the most popular torrent websites called ExtraTorrent decided to shut down. Many were surprised by this, especially since it would seem that the website has shut down for good. This was another one of the major players in the torrent community and has now joined Torrentz.eu and KickassTorrent.
All those who didn’t believe the news when they first appeared, and have gone to the website itself were greeted by a message that was pretty short but still clear. The message states that ExtraTorrent is permanently down. All of the data will be deleted, and the site also warns about the fake ExtraTorrent sites. Every website called ExtraTorrent from now on will be a fake one since the real one confirms that it won’t ever go back online.
The website’s operators were reached out to, and they’ve confirmed that this really is the end for the website. The operator didn’t provide almost any details when it comes to reasons behind this decision, only that the site, with all mirrors, will now go offline for good, just like the message on the homepage says.
Now that the ExtraTorrent went down, the question is whether the groups like ettv and EtHD will disappear with it or not, which is something that has yet to be seen.
As for the ExtraTorrent itself, it was founded back in November of 2006. It was a different time, back then, and websites like Mininova and TorrentSpy were pretty dominant during those days. Still, ExtraTorrent didn’t give up and worked on developing its own audience. Over time, their fan base grew a lot, and up until its end, it became the second biggest torrenting website. The only one that it didn’t manage to beat and outgrow is The Pirate Bay itself.
This, of course, means that it was still extremely popular, and millions of users were using it every day. A site with popularity like that has easily managed to steal the attention of many different entertainment groups, especially lately. So far, it is not clear if one of those groups or any kind of legal pressure is responsible for the website going own, but many have said that they wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case.
And when it comes to the BitTorrent giants that went down, there are plenty of them, with ExtraTorrent being only the last of them. The others that were shut down relatively recently include Torrentz.eu, KickassTorrent, and also TorrentHound.
We have also found out that one of the ExtraTorrent’s release groups called ETRG has followed its lead and has shut down as well. Others, like Ethd and Ettv, are said to be holding on for now, and that they might even sustain themselves with enough donations. It’s still unclear what will happen to them, and for now, we can only wait and see.
